| The
success story of Northern Kenya in partnership with the local community-
developing Kenya and preserving wildlife outside the parks.
Il
Ngwesi Lodge,
operated by the Il Ngwesi Group Ranch, opened in December 1996.
The
involvement of local communities in wildlife preservation to the
benefit of both the wildlife and community is a vital new style
of tourism. IlNgwesi is one of the forerunners and maintains traditional
use of the land, whilst encouraging reintegration of wild animals.
Profits are put back into the local community.
The annual profit together with a percentage of the income from
the culture Manyatta and Camel Trek is returned to the community
in the following way. 50% divided between all Group Ranch Members,
(499 households), 10% administration & vehicle Maintenance,
15% bursaries for secondary school and university candidates, 25%
development of the Group Ranch e.g. cattle dips water supplies,
school buildings.
The success so far of this project is promising for the future of
many group ranches countrywide and for the preservation of wildlife. |

The
Lodge overlooks the vast landscape of Kenya's northern district,
unspoiled land where not a single light shines out and only the
chorus of the African bush is heard at night. A water hole with
a viewing platform, the Melau, offers a chance to watch animals
includin'g elephant, lion, leopard, Lesser and Greater Kudu coming
in to drink. |
